New BlackBerry OS 5.0 Features Reported

The firmware could drop at WES 2009

Firmware version 5.0.0.90 for BlackBerry Bold leaked into the wild about two weeks ago, and Research Motion is expected to soon make the update official, given the fact that WES 2009 in is set to open its gates in a short while. Until that happens, we should take a look at some of the goodies that the firmware version will offer to all BlackBerry users out there.

Stationary date header in Messages is the first new thing that has been included in the update, providing users with the capability to track down the days in which emails they are looking at have been received. One thing that should be mentioned here is that users on BES 5.0 will receive some more features, including the options to flag emails and define them by request, color, status and due date as well as create, edit and delete folders from the device itself.

Viigo, the popular RSS reader for BlackBerry handsets, comes with a wide range of functionalities for mobile phone users already, yet it seems that some more features will soon be added to the application. According to the latest news on the web, the Viigo team intends to announce on May 5 the addition of multiple new enterprise-oriented features, along with Facebook and Twitter functionality, not to mention streaming audio.

The new Viigo functionality will be announced and showcased at RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in early May, and those to do it will be Viigo’s CEO Mark Ruddock and CTO Jay Steele. In addition, they will also hold an attendee question-and-answer session regarding the application.

Currently, Viigo is offered both in an enterprise and a “consumer” version, and the new features added to the enterprise version include enhanced corporate contacts functionality, as well as new budgeting and finance utilities. At the same time, the application will also come with company calendar and training and performance reporting tools.

The free version of Viigo will be enhanced with new Twitter and Facebook features, and it will also be added audio streaming capabilities, though it is not sure for the time being where the audio will come from. Moreover, it will include the option to make restaurant reservations directly from the smartphone, offering users the possibility to search for restaurants by region, a feature powered by Open Table.

Given the fact that Viigo also works on some mobile phones based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, the new features might become available for those versions as well, though nothing concrete has been unveiled for the moment. Those who haven't tried Viigo already can do so by downloading the application from Softpedia, either for a BlackBerry device, or for Windows Mobile-powered phones. Stay tuned to learn what other features the new Viigo will come with when launched.
