New BlackBerry OS 5.0 Features Reported

The firmware could drop at WES 2009

Firmware version 5.0.0.90 for BlackBerry Bold leaked into the wild about two weeks ago, and Research Motion is expected to soon make the update official, given the fact that WES 2009 in is set to open its gates in a short while. Until that happens, we should take a look at some of the goodies that the firmware version will offer to all BlackBerry users out there.

Stationary date header in Messages is the first new thing that has been included in the update, providing users with the capability to track down the days in which emails they are looking at have been received. One thing that should be mentioned here is that users on BES 5.0 will receive some more features, including the options to flag emails and define them by request, color, status and due date as well as create, edit and delete folders from the device itself.

Enlarge picture
Viigo, the popular RSS reader for BlackBerry handsets, comes with a wide range of functionalities for mobile phone users already, yet it seems that some more features will soon be added to the application. According to the latest news on the web, the Viigo team intends to announce on May 5 the addition of multiple new enterprise-oriented features, along with Facebook and Twitter functionality, not to mention streaming audio.

The new Viigo functionality will be announced and showcased at RIM’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in early May, and those to do it will be Viigo’s CEO Mark Ruddock and CTO Jay Steele. In addition, they will also hold an attendee question-and-answer session regarding the application.

Currently, Viigo is offered both in an enterprise and a “consumer” version, and the new features added to the enterprise version include enhanced corporate contacts functionality, as well as new budgeting and finance utilities. At the same time, the application will also come with company calendar and training and performance reporting tools.

The free version of Viigo will be enhanced with new Twitter and Facebook features, and it will also be added audio streaming capabilities, though it is not sure for the time being where the audio will come from. Moreover, it will include the option to make restaurant reservations directly from the smartphone, offering users the possibility to search for restaurants by region, a feature powered by Open Table.

Given the fact that Viigo also works on some mobile phones based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, the new features might become available for those versions as well, though nothing concrete has been unveiled for the moment. Those who haven't tried Viigo already can do so by downloading the application from Softpedia, either for a BlackBerry device, or for Windows Mobile-powered phones. Stay tuned to learn what other features the new Viigo will come with when launched.

The Motorola Evoke QA4

Motorola Evoke QA4

Motorola might be in the doldrums at the moment as each step they take does not seem to result in phenomenal sales of sorts, which can get rather depressing when you think about it. After all, they seem to have fallen into being a victim of their own success, where everything else after the RAZR just failed to capture the imagination of the masses, leading to the quandary where they’re at today. Still, it is nice to see them not throwing in the towel just yet, as it will be a sad day when Motorola is no longer part of the cell phone industry.

This time round, we have the Motorola Evoke QA4 that was announced officially. First of all, the Motorola Evoke QA4 is but a socially-inclined device that comes with a 2.8″ full touch screen display to make navigation and usage a snap. Your home screen content can be further customized with integrated widgets and personalized RSS feeds, where you are able to take advantage of the full HTML browser to share pictures, videos and other files online.

Versa: New LG Phone with Detachable QWERTY

LG and Verizon Wireless has recently announced the creation of the Versa, which they claim to be a real MVP (Most Versatile Phone).

So what makes it so versatile? Well, the big feature is that it comes with a QWERTY keyboard that is detachable, with an LED screen on the back. So if you are comfortable texting without the keyboard, you can just leave it at home.

Without the QWERTY, the Versa also works as a full touchscreen, and has an animated 3D interface with three different home screens and three options of layouts. The web browser is a full HTML that supports Flash and RSS feeds, with three browser windows open at a time.

Other features include a 2 Megapixel camera with face detection, a music player, microSD memory port, Bluetooth, plus it is VZ Navigator capable. Another feature is the Chaperone program, which allows the LG Versa to have its location shared with family members via the Chaperone Web site.

Of course, a lot of phones have the features listed in the previous paragraph. The detachable QWERTY is probably going to sell the Versa the most. I have a suggestion of how to improve it: create a detachable QWERTY that is the size of a normal computer keyboard, and make it so it folds up. That would make the mobile computing experience a lot easier.

The LG Versa should be available at Verizon Wireless stores on March 1 for $199.99 after $50 mail in rebate.

Card Mobile Phone

Pretty soon, they will be as tiny as the one that Ben Stiller had in Zoolander. Case in point: the card mobile phone, which is a cellular phone that is the size of a credit card.

Well, it is the length and width of a credit card, but it is thick as a stack of three credit cards. That is thin enough to slide into the pocket with your Visa or MasterCard, and it weighs in at 1.3 ounces.

In case you are concerned about the lack of buttons on the card mobile phone, dialing is accomplished by navigating an onscreen dialpad, and it also comes with a built-in voice dialer.

This is a dual band GSM GPRS that has about 200 minutes of talk time. The screen is either color or monochrome, and the credit card phone is waterproof.
It would appear that the user can put his or her personal message on it. Someone must be very proud that he or she won the CTIA Emerging Technology Awards.

The Card Mobile Phone will be available in June or July. Rumor has it that it will hit India, and then the United States.

Washington D.C. to get mobile television first

For years, European and Asian mobile phone customers have taken for granted the ability to watch television on their cell phones. It’s a large part of the reason why non-cable television in these locations is comparatively thriving compared to the US. Cell phone television is particularly common in Japan. So where is it in the United States already?

It’s coming. 22 cities are rushing to try to get a live mobile pedestrian handheld (or MPH) system running. MPH, for those in the know, is a modification of conventional transmissions that makes for reliable television reception is incredibly difficult when the receiver is moving. The MPH standard allows for both standard definition and high definition broadcasting, and also includes advanced video and audio coding and power saving features for mobile receivers.

Great stuff for those who want to watch House on their handsets. But unless you live in Washington, D.C. you’ll have an indefinite wait ahead of you.

The Open Mobile Video Colition have just announced that Washington D.C.’s local CBS, PBS, NBC and Ion affiliates will be ready to broadcast with MPH transmissions by late summer.

Now all that is missing is the hardware. Clearly there’s no American handsets out there yet that support the technology, although Dell has been banking on mobile television being an important feature of future netbooks with their add-on cards for the Dell Mini series… and which will supposedly be followed by a showing this week of a netbook with an integrated MPH tuner.

That’s a smart move on Dell’s part: with their long battery life and low-power chips, netbooks are a good fit for mobile television. Now let’s see Verizon and AT&T start bringing over some of those sexy MPH handsets from Japan.

Skype coming to the DSi?

Although the DSi managed to sell a remarkable 300,000 consoles in its first week of release in America, for those with a DS already, there’s little to recommend it. The camera will afford some nice Pictochat opportunities, and the ability to download DSiWare games is a nice little perk, but for those intimately familiar with the differences between systems, it’s a small update, easily overlooked but for a killer app that exclusively takes advantage of the DSi’s new functions.

Skype has come far enough that it runs on almost everything. Or at least its VoIP functions do. The real question is: can Skype bring video chat to the DSi? That function — truly handheld video chat — is what would truly make Skype the DSi’s killer app. But is the DSi beefy enough to handle it?

Tata Nano: The World’s Cheapest Car!

Tata Motors today took the covers off the world’s cheapest car — the Nano.

Tata's new market-moving 1-lakh rupee car is by no means a makeshift job - in fact, I think it is one of the best looking and most distinctive cars on the road. There may be enough on the road to make us get used to its looks soon, but the fresh design approach makes it rival some of the best micro-minis around the world.

Over the past year, Tata has been building hype for a car that would cost a mere 100,000 rupees (roughly $2,500) and bring automotive transportation to the mainstream Indian population.

It has been nicknamed the “People’s Car.”

The four-door Nano is a little over 10 feet long and nearly 5 feet wide. It is powered by a 623cc two-cylinder engine at the back of the car. With 33 horsepower, the Nano is capable of 65 miles an hour. Its four small wheels are at the absolute corners of the car to improve handling. There is a small trunk, big enough for a duffel bag.

The base price for the Nano will be 120,000 rupees, including road tax and delivery. Higher level models will cost more and come with air-conditioning. Sun visors and radios are extra.

Nano is a challenge not only for small cars but also for the two-wheelers. With the launch of the Nano, many two-wheeler manufacturers are planning to come out with attractive offers to sustain their market share. Many car manufacturers are also feeling a strong threat from Nano and are planning to introduce small cars.
